Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, released the following statement on Pope John Paul II Day:

“Today, Catholics and Canadians of many faiths remember a man who shaped our world. Pope John Paul II was one of the truly consequential figures of the twentieth century: a moral leader, a head of state and an inspiration to freedom-loving people across the globe.

“With a flock of millions spanning the length and breadth of our country, in 1984, John Paul II became the first reigning Pontiff to visit Canada. Returning for World Youth Day in 2002, these visits are fondly remembered by countless Canadian Catholics.

“Nor were these his only trips to our country. Previously, while still Archbishop of Krakow, Karol Wojtyla travelled to Canada to meet with communities of Polish heritage.

“Having lived through the Nazi occupation of Poland, love for his homeland was central to his life and mission. John Paul II would play an undeniably central role in ending socialist tyranny in Poland and, by extension, in the fall of communism across central and eastern Europe.

“As we reflect on this incredible legacy, we also remember John Paul II’s commitment to peaceful coexistence between faiths – a commitment that we are working hard to uphold as part of Canada’s promise.

“On behalf of Canada’s Common Sense Conservatives, I want to wish everyone celebrating a very happy Pope John Paul II Day!”
