Ottawa, ON – Today, Michael Chong, Conservative candidate for Wellington-Halton Hills North, issued the following statement on Mark Carney’s candidate for Markham-Unionville Paul Chiang:

Yesterday, it came to light that Mark Carney’s Liberal candidate, Paul Chiang, called for a Conservative candidate to be turned over to the authoritarian regime in Beijing in return for a bounty offered by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Paul Chiang’s support for the CCP’s illegal and unjust bounty on a Canadian citizen is shocking, particularly to the countless Canadians of Chinese descent who have been targeted and harassed by the communist regime. The CCP is a hostile regime that has interfered in our elections, kidnapped and executed Canadian citizens and remains a grave threat to Canada’s national security.

After the lost Liberal decade of turning a blind eye to foreign interference by the CCP, warnings from experts and a public inquiry, the Liberals continue to tolerate foreign interference putting the security of Canadians at risk.

Mark Carney’s silence on his candidate creates the dangerous impression that he condones this despicable suggestion.

Carney’s track record on China makes his silence even more concerning. Just last year he was in Beijing rubbing elbows with President Xi, and praising the CCP on state television.

And that wasn’t his only time cozying up to the authoritarian regime.  After Justin Trudeau named Mark Carney as his economic advisor, Carney went to Beijing for talks with the deputy governor of the Chinese central bank.

Two weeks later, Brookfield got a quarter-billion-dollar loan from a Chinese state bank.

Conservatives call on Mark Carney to immediately remove Paul Chiang as his Liberal candidate for Markham-Unionville.

If he won’t remove a candidate for calling for the involuntary return of a political opponent in the service of another country, when will he stand up against foreign interference?

The Carney Government is just the same old Liberals. They do not deserve a fourth term.

It’s time for a change. It’s time for a new Conservative government that takes national security seriously and puts Canada first for a change.
